A Short History

Berat has a long and rich history, going back more than 2,400 years. It has seen many cultures come and go — from the ancient Illyrians to the Ottomans — and each has left its mark on the city. Here are some key facts:

  • Ancient beginnings:

Berat started as an Illyrian settlement and later became a Roman town known as Antipatrea.

  • The Castle:

The massive Berat Castle was first built in the 4th century Before Christ. People still live inside the castle walls today.

  • Religious harmony:

Berat is known for peaceful coexistence between different religions. Inside the castle, you’ll find both churches and mosques side by side.

  • Onufri’s legacy:

The famous 16th-century painter Onufri, known for his bright red color, lived and worked here. His icons are on display in the Onufri Museum.

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site:

In 2008, Berat was added to the UNESCO list for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture and unique mix of cultural influences.

This mix of history, architecture, and tolerance makes Berat one of Albania’s most special cities.
